Find out about our new RSS-based micro-courses
We are embarking on providing a new service to schools called Feeds for Teachers, a series of professional development micro-courses delivered via RSS feeds. These courses consist of postings that can be accessed through any RSS reader installed on the user's computer or available online. Our recommended readers are the Sage reader for the Firefox browser and the online feed aggregator Bloglines. Both are free and easy to get started with.
We have created a tutorial that teachers can use to get started with RSS, including step-by-step instructions for installing Sage and creating a Bloglines account. That tutorial can be accessed by navigating to FeedsForTeachers.com or clicking on the link below.
If you have already set up your own access to RSS feeds, the final page of the tutorial provides instructions for picking up our feed. You can jump to that page by clicking here.
Courses will begin on the 1st and 15th of each month.
The currently available course is entitled "Technology Security for Teachers." The course is a very basic set of tips having to do with secure computing, including posts on email, securing computers in the classroom, passwords, and so forth. Each post is brief, no more than two short paragraphs and no more than 200 words. They are meant to be read at a glance and offer a suggestion on a single topic. This course is designed for teachers who are beginners and intermediate users.
Each post also includes an interesting "factoid" about the topic of the post, with a link for further reading. Even your more advanced faculty will likely find these factoids interesting.
Once this demo of the micro-course is complete, additional courses will be announced on this page and on the FeedsForTeachers.com homepage. In order to keep these courses advertisement free, a subscription plan will be offered to schools that want to make this resource available to its teachers on an ongoing basis. Keep an eye on this space for details.
